Ball Bros was based in Muncie, Indiana. Glass jars with this embossed marking probably constitute the most popular jar for home canning ever produced in the United States. The thick walls of these jars, makes them ideal for canning, and has made it the preferred method of preserving food in many homes. In John Landis Mason patented his sealing method for jars, and the Mason jar was born. The screw on lids of these jars creates a small vacuum that keeps the seal tight and protect food from spoiling. Different Uses for Various Sizes Mason jars can be bought in a great variety of sizes and styles.
So why would we need different sized mouth openings? Well, there are a few reasons. Since you can preserve a very wide variety of foods, you will be dealing with different sizes and shapes of food. Actually filling the jars can be tricky or time consuming depending on what you are canning. A larger opening could be required to make it possible to preserve fruits or vegetables intact and whole.
Other times a small jar mouth is sufficient, especially for preserving smaller portions.

Cook At Home I’ve just discovered, to my sorrow, that Jardin i. The new lids do not seem to me to be as heavyweight as the old style, which to me would seem to make them quicker to rust and thus fail. But what really makes me upset is that the company has dropped the “Dome” design–the raised certer circle or dimple–in these new, thin lids.
That “Dome” was not there for aesthetics, as you all I’m sure know it was a safety feature whereby you could tellL visually and by touch whether your product had spoiled and containing botulism — the gases produced by the spoiled product would make the dimple “pop” up and it would be immediately obvious that the product was no longer safe to eat.
It has more than once, saved me from opening a jar that was still fully sealed, and serving that to my family. Does anyone know of ANY source, anywhere, of the “old-style” canning lids, that still have the center “Dome” feature? If I can find them, I’ll buy up all I can lay hands on.

Please, think of the kittens! What part of that is not evil? The Harmless Villain , those suffering from massive Villain Decay , those who want to be evil , but can’t just get that pesky “no moral compass” part down , and sometimes heroes disguised as villains —God bless ’em—their idea of evil is harmless behavior like cheating at Solitaire, jaywalking, chewing gum in Singapore, pulling the “do not remove” tag off of your mattress , hiding your toothpaste, drinking the milk directly from the carton, and gasp!
So, here’s to those villains who should consider a new career—specifically the moments when they really show how wanting for evil they are. If a henchman is the one who can’t maintain a minimum level on villainy, they’re a Minion with an F in Evil. If the latter comes up in his list of offenses, it’s Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking. Tom Caniff October 22, As we begin our journey into the 21st century, there are many things we now take for granted that were of great importance to our forebears. One of them is the home canning jar or fruit jar. Although far fewer people are doing their own home canning at the beginning of this century than did at the beginning of the last, the early years of home canning had an effect that touches many aspects of our present life.
It was the perseverance of the 19th-century housewives to preserve food for their families to be used through the non-growing months that brought us to where we stand today in food preservation. Those early fruit jar pioneers paved the way for the tinned and bottled foods that we buy so easily at the supermarket.

As he said in the Fruit Jar Newsletter of December It is unknown why Ball continued to make competitor jars long after having acquiring them. The only clue is on the bottom of the box, where, along with the date – – it lists Ball as the maker of the box. The mystery – why did Ball continue to make and sell jars with the Drey name for years after the buyout, not advertising them, and even trying to hide the fact that they were the maker?
The solution came about simply enough one day in the Fall of , when I got a message that Mr. As most of you know, Mr. Ball was the son of one of the five Ball brothers that founded the famous fruit jar company. As the Ball Brothers Foundation is the source of most of the funding for Minnetrista, where I work, the request was treated with proper attention. My hopes of finding a treasure trove of old, rare, unreported jars were quickly dashed.
The artifacts consisted mainly of the commemorative and retirement jars that Ball pumped out in the last 25 years. There were a bunch of bottles, flasks, mugs and glasses, none fruit jar related. Ball explained to me.

Hazel-Atlas eventually grew to become one of the largest glass manufacturing firms in the world, probably second in the United States, behind Owens-Illinois Glass Company with 14 glass plants operating simultaneously. The Plainfield plant was later sold to A. I have noticed items listed for sale by dealers and sellers at antique malls, flea markets and other venues such as ebay with labels indicating Anchor Hocking. Codes on bases of H-A bottles: Many of the Hazel-Atlas containers I have seen do not conform exactly to this chart, but this might be of some help in interpreting the markings on some of their products.
This chart is probably from a trade publication of the s: Chart of Hazel-Atlas base codes on containers, courtesy of fruitjar.

He created and patented a glass jar to be used in home canning and food preservation. That was back in His jars, like the jars of today, had a screw thread mouth that accepted a metal band and a lid that featured a rubber ring on its underside. When done right, that gasket could form a hermetic seal to preserve food for a long period of time. It was an invention that changed America and the world. However, because those mold makers are no longer in business, nobody knows what those mold numbers represent.
To date your jars, be sure to pick up a book by Douglas M. There are several editions to the book. Jar prices in the book do tend to go up and down according to collector demand.
