Printing Out Paper was used for early Judges postcards, the prints developing in the sun in shop windows More consistent results were achieved from onwards when the company acquired an exposing machine. It was then that the numbering of the main series of postcards began. A change in the British Post Office’s rules permitted privately produced postcards to be posted from onward.

It is in many ways a key and vital artery through the area. A few years back, a friend who knew I had been trying to build a collection of old Dolomites postcards gave me as a birthday present a small, hand-made, soft covered booklet of sepia and white photographs. The booklet contained 36 photographs by A. We estimated that the booklet dated from the early s at the latest, and had been produced for the tourist market to commemorate the Great Dolomite Road, the last pieces of which were completed in My friend had found the booklet in a local second-hand bookshop.

It used to be in the block of shops right in the middle of this image from Google Streetview. However, e-mail being a wonderful thing, I was able to contact a representative of the family, who agreed to me incorporating copies of the original Zardini photographs into a web-site based comparison between the views 90 to years ago, and the same scenes as they are today.

This web site is that project. It gives me an opportunity to celebrate the excellence of Antonia Verocai Zardini, one of the great early photographers of the Dolomites, and to show how much, and at the same time, how little the area has altered. Part of the fun and frustration! The same is also true for many of the postcards in my collection.

Printers, and Distributors of Note Postcards may have the names of a number of different people or entities printed on them or sometimes none at all. In place of a name a logo is often substituted. Who are all these people? Many times it comes down to nothing more than guesswork. The most common name on a postcard is that of the publisher who commissions the postcard and often supplies the image.

The next most likely name is that of the printer who manufactures the card.

Our upcoming special occasion got the wheels turning in my head and I started coming up with some fun printables that I could create and share for others to use for their anniversaries. I started simply with an Anniversary card. Then the wheels in my head really got rolling. I landed on an idea for a deck of 52 cards, with 52 date ideas. However, it was something I had never designed before and I was excited to see what I could come up with!

A potential gift, a solution for those nights when you just have no idea what to do, AND a memento to keep. Instead, I went ahead and tackled something that I avoid at all costs, which is a project that involves construction. Even glue can be scary to me. However, I knew that these pretty cards needed a box to go in, so I shook off my fears and faced this challenge. Below you will see the card box that I created a template for, and assembled, all on my own. My 3-D design professor from college would never believe I was able to pull this off.

I know that some of you are probably rolling your eyes at me right now, but to me it feels like I just climbed Everest. I broke down the date ideas into three categories: My hope is that these ideas will appeal to a wide range of couples who may have different interests.

The Wizard is simple — you just have to peruse the multiple choices and click where appropriate. How Does the Wizard Work? The majority of card mounts were produced by a limited number of stationery printers who then customised them for a particular photographer by adding name, address, patrons, medals and various other individual requirements. Therefore, a particular design of card mount used in Manchester would be used at approximately the same time in York and Brighton as well — in fact countrywide.

Many characteristics were short lived as new mount designs and features were constantly introduced by the printers to encourage photographers to buy more mounts so as to remain up to date and in fashion.

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the historic port of Queenborough. A list of sections on this page is shown below. The Table beneath gives links to complete history pages on selected individual ships. A Brief History of Queenborough Port: Sheerness was a continental ferry port for Dutch mail services between and , hence its inclusion on this website. Services were run by the Zeeland Steamship Company. Queenborough owes its name to King Edward IlI who renamed the town of Bynne in honour of his wife Queen Phillipa, when it was upgraded to borough status.

The castle was pulled down in In Queenborough surrendered to a raid by the Dutch. The English fleet moored here just before the attack of the Spanish armada and, more recently, the waters off Queenborough were chosen as an assembly point for the Dunkirk ‘little ships’. Nelson was a communicant at the parish church and the artist Hogarth is believed te have stayed at the old Ship Inn in the High Street. Having become a ‘new town’ of the Middle Ages, Queenborough prospered for much of its early life, but its role as a port was later undermined by the growth of Rochester and Chatham and, ironically, neighbouring Sheerness as a naval port.

New industries gradually came to the town’s rescue and there is much evidence, even today, of the impact made by the industrial expansion of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

The images show the famous strongholds sat peacefully in their idyllic and breathtaking locations across the country, from Dover to Durham. The nostalgic snaps, of which the originals date from between and , are evocative of a different era when the historic buildings had fewer visitors and information signs. However, it stands on the site of an earlier castle erected in the 12th Century. The castle was a key location during the revolt of Richard the Lionheart and others against King Henry II’s reign Dover Castle has been described as the ‘Key to England’ due to its defensive significance and location, on the south-easterly tip of Britain.

Dating Postcards Many of the postcards in my collection have been posted and so are easy to date, even if the postmark is unreadable. But even more haven’t been posted and so, whilst the photograph can be very important in dating a card, the back of the card can be equally useful.

Here are a number of references which can be used to research old antique postcards and to date vintage postcards. Many postcard history and postcard artist links are included. Model 12K The New Family was later renamed the Singer Model 12 12K in the UK and remained in production for almost 40 years, until just past the turn of the 20th century. The characteristic shape of the bed on the early models resulted in them being referred to as Singer fiddle base machines.

The New Family was the first high volume mass produced sewing machine. Despite its high cost, its attractive and reliable design meant that it sold in huge volumes and established Singer as the market leading sewing machine manufacturer for next century. As soon as the original patents expired, the New Family design was widely copied by other manufacturers.

The New Family Model 12 machines had a transverse boat shaped shuttle and used round shank straight needles which were designated as Class 12×1. Model 12K – Underbed Over their long production run there were several minor modifications made to the machine. The most significant of which was the transfer of the tension adjuster screw from the front of the faceplate to the top.
